Sparked! A blogfest.

Get your sparkage on with the Sparkfest hosted by Christine Tyler. It runs until the 26th, so there is still time to sign up.

The blogfest questions are:

What book made you realize you were doomed to be a writer?
What author set off that spark of inspiration for your current WiP?
Or Is there a book or author that changed your world view?

I started writing for fun when I was much younger, but it wasn’t until recently that I started writing seriously. And it is completely the fault of my friend Marie.

A few years ago Marie gave me a three-ring binder neatly filled with type-written pages.

Marie and me at 14-years-old:

She’s the one sporting the wicked camera. Yes, we still both look that young and beautiful.

So--she pressed the binder into my hand all serious and nervous.

“I wrote a book.” she said. “Will you read it?”

I asked her when she had time to write a book--with having twin boys less than a year ago.

“Nap time,” she said, like it was the easiest thing in the world to whip out a novel between diapers and tummy time and fractured nights.

Marie’s book, now contained by a binding instead of a binder:

And I thought--if she can write a novel during nap time, then surely I, with summers off due to my teaching gig, could manage to spew out a novel. I’d tried to write them before but always wandered away. Mostly because I spent a lot of my 20s doing this (well, and going to college and grad school on occasion too):

So I started doing this instead:

In between moments of this:

How could I not post such awesomeness?

All because Marie said I could do it, and Marie is usually right.

So I did it--I wrote a novel. And then I did it again. And again. And then the writing obsession started.

Consider me sparked.

How did you get sparked?

That was a great story! And yes, you had to post the cute chubby cheeked baby picture. Nap time is my time to write too.

That's a wonderful story and your baby is adorable!! I don't know what to do now that naptime essentially doesn't exist for my older kids.

That picture of you and your son is beyond precious! I think you kind of look like Hilary Swank, especially in the 14 year old picture!

And thanks for the compliment on my blog. All I see when I look in the mirror are the things that need improvement!

I think I love every part of your story! What a way to get sparked and the fact that your friend is still around, you both writing and having kids and all the other stuff that comes with it:)
I'm one of your campaign buddies so I thought I'd stop by and say hi. Hi! I can't wait to get to know you better:)

That baby picture is AMAZING!

It's pretty impressive how one persons success can push you to go farther than you thought you could.

What a cool story!
Hmm, I think (and don't throw rotten fruit at me if you're not a fan!) I got sparked by reading Twilight. I mean, I'd written bits and pieces before that, but I never thought I could seriously write a book. But then I read Twilight and had my lightbulb (spark) moment. I thought, "If she can write a purely fantastical romance because that's what she likes, then why can't I?"

Gina--I love that picture too. And it isn't the first time I've gotten the Hilary Swank thing. I used to get it all the time--even from random people on the street. Since I've gained a little weight since the pregnancy, it doesn't happen all that much anymore. But maybe after my current diet works some magic...

Deana--Thanks for stopping by!

Mary--Thanks for stopping by!

Small Town--It is amazing how someone else can do that for you! I try to surround myself with people who push me.

Rachel--I think a lot of people got sparked by Twilight, which I think is awesome. Any book that can spark someone is am-a-zing. I'm not a Twilight hater. I enjoyed reading them, and although they weren't life changing for me, I appreciate and love how much they were life changing for others.

OMG. The snuggle-tude of that picture is melting my heart. Time for a new baby, I guess!

I wrote my first MS during naptime, too. Determined ladies can do anything.

Heidi,
That was an awesome story! I loved that you included photos too. One of the joys I get out of blogging is getting to know blogging buddies like you.

Thanks again for sharing!

Leigh Ann--I think there are a lot of us nap time writers out there. I guess you do it whenever you can!

What a fabulous spark! My renewed spark came from a friend, too.

Very nice - I love hearing about how peoples' friends/family members were their sparks. It really helps as a writer to have supportive loved ones.

Also? Cutest. Baby pic. Ever. :-)

Isn'tit funny how you suddenly realize "hey I can do that" I have seen so many posts that say that and I think it's awesome that more people are realizing their potential. Great spark!!

Laura Marcella said...

Hello, Heidi! What a wonderful story. It's awesome you and Marie can share your writing journeys together.

Reading sparked me to be a writer! When I was a little kid, I couldn't get enough of reading and books. So I started writing my own stories, too, and solved that problem! :)

Heidi Windmiller said...

M Pax--Thanks!

Crystal--Yes. We have like a thousand of the cutest baby every pictures--not that I'm overly proud.

Dafeenah--Thanks! Good to see you again!

Laura--Thanks! Reading is a great spark--it is, after all, why most of us are writing!

Oh man, this makes me wish I had written my sparks completely differently. My babe was born three months ago and has been a major inspiration. Kind of wishing I'd talked about that now. Ah well. So much fun to read about your sparks! Especially the friendship :D
